Tignes Ski Resort
Set high in the spectacular Tarentaise Valley, Tignes is one of France’s most snow-sure ski resorts, renowned for its long winter season, exceptional skiing and vibrant mountain atmosphere. Linked with neighbouring Val d’Isère, it forms one of Europe’s finest high-altitude ski areas, with 300 km of pistes and an enormous variety of terrain for skiers and snowboarders of all levels.
Tignes enjoys one of the most reliable snow records in the Alps. Thanks to its high altitude and consistently low winter temperatures, excellent snow conditions are maintained throughout the season, even during milder spells. The Grande Motte Glacier helps extend the ski season well into spring, making Tignes an excellent choice for those seeking early or late-season holidays. The ski area caters for everyone, from complete beginners to expert skiers and snowboarders. Around 57% of the pistes are green, blue and red runs, making it particularly popular with beginners and intermediates looking to build confidence on wide, well-groomed slopes. More advanced skiers are equally well catered for, with challenging black runs, exciting itineraries and some of the finest off-piste and freeride terrain in the French Alps.
Tignes continues to invest heavily in its lift system and visitor experience. Recent improvements include the new Le Marais six-seater detachable chairlift, which is faster, quieter and more energy efficient while carrying over 2,000 skiers every hour. Tignes is made up of five distinct villages, each with its own character. Tignes Le Lac (2,100 m) is the lively heart of the resort, while Tignes Val Claret sits even higher at 2,150 m, offering excellent ski-in-ski-out accommodation and quick access to the glacier. The lower villages of Tignes Le Lavachet (2,050 m), Tignes Les Boisses (1,800 m) and Tignes Les Brévières (1,550 m) provide a quieter, more traditional side of Tignes and easy links to the wider ski area via the modern lift system and free shuttle buses that connect every part of the resort.
The history of Tignes is unlike any other Alpine village. The original village was flooded in 1952 when the valley was dammed to create the Lac du Chevril hydroelectric reservoir. When the reservoir is periodically lowered for inspection and maintenance, remnants of the old village can occasionally be seen emerging from beneath the water. Standing proudly beside the lake is the striking sculpture La Dame du Lac (The Lady of the Lake), erected to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the flooding. It has become one of the valley’s most recognisable landmarks and has a fascinating story of its own.
