Technical Training BASI Level l Criteria & PIA’s

When you are training with BASS or BASI you will learn skills and how to develop them. These skills are organised into fundamental elements. The criteria is a way of measuring how skilful you have become at performing the fundamental elements in the Central Theme and Strands.

The points below are covered in more detail in your BASI Manual. Read one section each evening and reflect up on what you have understood during BASS training you attend.

What are the Fundamental Elements?

Every sport has a set of core skill needed to participate. Alpine skiing has its own specific collection of skills that enable you to achieve, improve and adapt your performance. All instructors need to understand the FE’s to be able to analyse and improve the performance of their students.

What is the
Central Theme?

The CT is a road map of skills for the learner to progress from no experience to parallel skiing.
The Fundamental Elements are progressively added and improved upon to develop the student. All the skills learned during this phase of development are linked to performing in the strands. The CT is an introduction to the sport that prepares the learner for what is to come

What are the
Strands?

There is a variety of mountain terrain that need different tactical approaches to successfully perform skilful skiing up on them. Terrain that is psychologically and physically challenging and needs a skilful blend of the FE’s to descend successfully. The categories you will be trained in are:
1. Short & Long turns on piste ‘Piste Performance’

2. Unpisted terrain in a range of snow conditions ‘Variable Terrain’

3. Terrain shaped by skiing traffic ‘Bumps’
4. Steeps

What are the
PIA's
?

The Performance Indicators and Actions are descriptions of a student’s application of the skills in a strand, and their ability to perform them in actions that represent a level of performance. There are also inhibiting actions that block successful performance outcomes. These are listed in a training guideline to focus skills and their application to enable a student to perform at a level that meets the criteria and possibly beyond.
